Weekend In Savannah

So, I was supposed to go to Savannah the other weekend but other plans came up and I wasn't able to go. I was bummed when we had such nice weather on Sunday and I knew it would feel like spring in Savannah. It got me thinking about the city and what I would do or recommend someone to do if they were in Savannah for the weekend.
I thought I would share with you my ideal itinerary. I'm giving you some "Save" options and some "Splurge" options, you could also see these as save = more family friendly options and splurge = romantic weekend options. I hope you can use these and enjoy Savannah. It's one of my favorite southern cities.

First thing I would do, is check the Savannah visitor's website. See what kind of events are going on that weekend in Savannah and Tybee Island. You may want to join these events or avoid them.
Also, be sure, if you're going to be spending time downtown, you may want to invest in a parking pass for the city. You can find information about that at the Visitor's Center. Currently it's $15 for a single day.

Friday - Downtown Day

Breakfast or just coffee: Sentient Bean - bring cash or check for them. Bring your mug and save money too.

Save Activity: walk around Forsyth Park and see if the Fragrant Garden is open. Or there are many neat shops in Savannah. We like to check out some of the used bookstores, like the Book Lady Bookstore. You can get lost in here. Also, you can check out Broughton Street for all kinds of shops.

Lunch: Zunzi's -  splurge or save, you should try this place! But be prepared, they operate more like a take-out place and the lines can get long. But it's worth it! They do have some outdoor seating available.

Splurge Activity: Walk off your lunch on a walking tour, like this Architectural one: http://www.architecturalsavannah.com/
Splurge or Save Activity: Afternoon Tea at the Gryphon Tea Room

Dinner:
Splurge: Sapphire Grill - Great food. High-end dining. This small place is great for a date night. Located near the City Market.
Save: You may want to explore a restaurant on River Street. Or drive out to B's Cracklin BBQ to get some award-winning southern BBQ.

Evening Activity: Check out the Bohemian Hotel on the Savannah Riverfront. They have a rooftop bar that overlooks the Savannah River.

Saturday - Beach Day

Be aware that most places on Tybee have metered parking. But, if you pay at one of their automated parking meters, I believe they're good all over the island.
Breakfast: The Breakfast Club, Tybee - Not my favorite place but they're popular! Your typical breakfast diner food. (Warning! Their website plays music!)

Splurge Activity: Visit the Tybee Lighthouse and Fort Screven on the North end of the island. Or you could visit the Fort Pulaski, not far West of Tybee
Save Activity: Walk or bike the former railroad line that served Tybee. There are a few parking areas off of Hwy. 80. One is at the Fort Pulaski entrance, the other is further West on Hwy. 80. (Caution: if it's summertime, it can get buggy. Bring bug spray and sunscreen.)
Or you can bike or walk around Tybee Island. The island is only 2.75 miles long. Also there are many painted turtle sculptures around the island that are fun to find.

Lunch: North Beach Grill - feel free to show up in your beach clothes. But be prepared - not much AC or heat.

Save Activity: visit the Oatland Island Wildlife Center (it's like a zoo)
Splurge Activity: Stand Up Paddleboard or Kayak around Tybee. We've gone kayaking with Savannah Canoe and Kayak before and had a great experience with them. Or check out Tybee Island Marine Science Center - there are guided tours around the island

Dinner:
Spend Downtown: Local 11Ten - one of my favorite restaurants in Savannah. Make reservations!
Spend Tybee: Sundae Cafe - Good Italian and seafood but you may need to make reservations.
Save: Sunset at Coco's Sunset Grill - they have a great deck to watch the sunset on.

Evening Activity: Drinks and dessert, sometimes live music at Tybee Island Social Club

Sunday

Brunch:
Tybee: Tybee Island Social Club
Splurge Downtown: Collin's Quarter - I've wanted to go but haven't eaten here. It's pretty popular but the food looks good. (They also run The Deck on Tybee, which is worth checking out.)
Save Downtown: B Matthews Eatery - another on my list to visit sometime

Save Activity: Visit the Bonaventure Cemetery. Historical and very 'Southern Gothic', there are walking tours or self-guided tours available.
Splurge Activity: Wormsloe State Historic Site - beautiful ruins, nature trails, picnic area, this site has been used in movies before. There are various events that have re-enactments.
